| Family coverage | $8,750 | $9,000 | +$250 (+2.9%) |

| HDHP minimum deductible, family | $3,400 | $3,500 | +$100 |
| HDHP out-of-pocket maximum, self-only | $8,500 | $8,700 | +$200 |
| HDHP out-of-pocket maximum, family | $17,000 | $17,400 | +$400 |
Sources: Rev. Proc. 2025-19, section 2 and Rev. Proc. 2026-24, section 3. The age-55 catch-up is a separate $1,000 statutory amount, not an inflation-adjusted figure in those procedures. You must be 55 or older at the end of the tax year. Eligibility and Medicare restrictions still apply; part-year eligibility may reduce it. See Publication 969.
HDHP out-of-pocket amounts exclude premiums; for network plans, the limit applies to in-network expenses. These are the general HDHP thresholds. Special rules for qualifying individual-market bronze and catastrophic plans are described below.
How the limit works
Your annual allowance depends on monthly eligibility. Under the monthly method, check your HSA eligibility and coverage on the first day of each month. Add one-twelfth of the applicable annual limit for each eligible month, including any eligible age-based catch-up. This determines a yearly allowance; it does not require equal monthly deposits. See the Form 8889 instructions.
The last-month rule may allow more. For a calendar-year taxpayer who is HSA-eligible on December 1, this rule may allow the full-year limit based on December 1 coverage. To retain that benefit, you generally must remain eligible from December 1 through December 31 of the following year. Losing eligibility during that period, other than because of death or disability, generally makes the additional contributions allowed only by this rule taxable and subject to an additional 10% tax. See Publication 969. The embedded 2026 calculator uses only the monthly method; it does not apply the last-month rule or calculate its testing-period consequences.
Separate accounts do not create separate family limits. Each person's contribution limit applies across all of their HSAs. When both spouses are eligible and either has family HDHP coverage, they share the family base limit; separate HSAs do not double it. The spouses split that base equally unless they agree to another division. Each eligible spouse's age-based catch-up belongs in that spouse's own HSA. See Publication 969.
The calculator below supports only the 2026 monthly method for one owner. For married family coverage, the entire shared base must be allocated to that owner, with no spouse use or independent spousal HDHP coordination. Other allocations require a calculation outside this tool.
It's a combined total. Your contributions and any employer contributions to your HSA share the same ceiling — an employer seed doesn't sit outside it.
Who can contribute
You need HSA-qualifying coverage and must meet the eligibility conditions on the first day of each month. You cannot be enrolled in Medicare or be someone else's tax dependent. General-purpose health FSA or HRA coverage that can reimburse your medical expenses generally disqualifies you, including a spouse's FSA that covers you (Notice 2005-86, Background). Limited-purpose dental/vision or qualifying post-deductible arrangements may be permitted. A spouse's non-HDHP plan does not disqualify you if it does not cover you. See Publication 969.
Check the newer coverage exceptions. From 2026, qualifying bronze and catastrophic plans available as individual coverage through an ACA Exchange are treated as HDHPs even if they do not meet the general thresholds above. The same plans bought off-Exchange can qualify; additional off-Exchange relief and plan conditions are explained in Notice 2026-5, Q&As 4–8. This does not automatically make every employer bronze plan HSA-qualified. Permitted telehealth coverage and qualifying direct primary care arrangements also need not disqualify you; their conditions are described in that notice. Confirm your plan's HSA eligibility before selecting an eligible month in the calculator. The tool does not classify insurance plans for you.
How much room do you have left?
This calculator uses the 2026 monthly method for one HSA owner. Each month is assessed on its first day. Amounts above this method need further review; the last-month rule may allow more.
HSA or 401(k)?
They're not rivals, and the order people usually consider them in is a question of matching, not of picking a favorite:
- Employer match first — it's the only contribution with an immediate return you can calculate.
- HSA next, if you have qualifying coverage — it's the account with the most favorable tax treatment of the three, and unlike an FSA it isn't use-it-or-lose-it.
- Then the rest of your 401(k) room — see 401(k) contribution limits for 2027.
One caution worth stating: an HSA is only as good as your ability to pay current medical costs out of pocket. If you can't, the deductible does the damage the tax break was supposed to offset.
Frequently asked questions
What are the 2027 HSA contribution limits? $4,500 for self-only coverage and $9,000 for family coverage, per IRS Revenue Procedure 2026-24 — up from $4,400 and $8,750 for 2026.
When did the IRS announce the 2027 HSA limits? The IRS set the 2027 figures in Revenue Procedure 2026-24, published in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-25, dated June 15, 2026. That is the bulletin publication date, not a claim about the first online release.
Does an employer contribution count toward my HSA limit? Yes. Employer and employee contributions share one ceiling.
Can I contribute to an HSA if I'm on my spouse's family plan? Family-plan coverage alone does not establish HSA eligibility; all eligibility conditions must be met. When both spouses are eligible and either has family HDHP coverage, they share the family base limit. They can agree to a different split, and each eligible spouse makes any age-based catch-up contribution to their own HSA. This calculator supports only the restricted allocation described above; it does not calculate an arbitrary split between spouses.
What happens if I contribute too much to an HSA? Excess contributions are not deductible and generally incur a 6% excise tax for each year they remain uncorrected. Ask your HSA custodian about returning the excess and attributable earnings by your tax-return due date, including extensions, for the contribution year. A timely correction can avoid the excise tax on the returned excess; the earnings are taxable in the year withdrawn. See Publication 969, Excess contributions. Exceeding this calculator's monthly-method allowance alone does not establish an excess: the last-month rule may permit more. This tool does not calculate corrections, excise taxes or last-month-rule eligibility.
Is an HSA still worth it if I rarely see a doctor? That's exactly the case the account was designed for — but the decision depends on your deductible, your cash flow, and whether the plan you'd switch to is otherwise worse. We don't recommend plans; we just make sure the limits you're reading are correct.
