2026 estimates are provisional and cover a limited W-2 situation. Review the scope and data limitations before relying on a result.

Scope and data limitations

Restricted ordinary W-2 estimate. The 2026 Tax/EIC tables and related refund forms are IRS drafts; results are provisional.

This restricted estimate does not model the federal-public-benefit adjustment shown on the draft 2026 Schedule 3-A. The applicable final rules and forms still require review before any claim of full 2026 return accuracy.

Standard deduction, Tax Table / worksheet and credit eligibility apply only within the confirmed scope. Earned income and AGI both equal the annual W-2 wages in this method.

Net balance = withholding + ACTC + EITC − total tax. Total tax is ordinary income tax less nonrefundable CTC/ODC, with a floor of zero. A positive balance is a refund; a negative balance is an amount owed.

Your basics

If you are unsure, leave your filing status unconfirmed. Another filing status is outside this tool’s supported methods.
Help with filing status

Head of household requires its own eligibility checks; having a child alone is not enough. Review IRS filing status guidance.

Add Box 1 from all W-2s. Include your spouse’s for a joint return. Do not subtract payroll 401(k) or HSA contributions again. Sum the cents first; the combined total is then rounded to whole dollars.
Add Box 2 from all W-2s. Enter 0 if none.
Will you claim any dependents?

This helps choose the questions to ask. Each credit has its own eligibility rules.

Help with dependents

If you are not sure, review the IRS dependent guidance, then return to this answer. EITC qualifying children are assessed separately.

How this tax refund estimator works

Four steps, all in your browser:

  1. Subtract the standard deduction. After you confirm the supported scope, we use the 2026 ordinary standard deduction for your selected filing status.

  2. Look up ordinary income tax. Taxable income below the table limit uses the supplied IRS Tax Table; higher amounts use the ordinary-income worksheet.

  3. Subtract credits. Apply eligible nonrefundable CTC/ODC against tax. Calculate ordinary ACTC and EITC separately; stop if an unsupported method is required.

  4. Compare to what you've paid. Withholding plus refundable ACTC and EITC, minus total tax, gives the estimated refund or amount owed.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this tax refund calculator?
This is a restricted 2026 ordinary W-2 estimate using the standard deduction, Tax Table or worksheet, CTC/ODC, ordinary ACTC and EITC. It requires scope and eligibility confirmations. The 2026 Tax/EIC tables and related refund forms are IRS drafts, so results are provisional. The draft Schedule 3-A federal-public-benefit adjustment is not modeled. Unsupported situations return no amount.
When will I get my refund?

Does this include my state refund?
No — this estimates your federal refund only. Use our state tax refund calculator →
What if the calculator says I owe?
The estimate shows a negative net balance within the confirmed scope. It is not a final filing result. Review the inputs and applicable tax rules before filing.
Is my information stored or shared?
